L.A. Times

We made it back into North America!

After a long dark night of sleep at our four star Hotwire Mystery Deal Hotel just a short drive from LAX, we set our in our Dodge Caliber to tackle the famed west coast drive.

First up though is a little toodle through LA. We hit Rodeo Drive, Sunset Blvd, Santa Monica Blvd, and Wiltshire. People, stores, cars as far as they eye can see. Still, we have to make sure we get a look at that Hollywood sign up on the hill and all the swank stores!

After an hour or so we are fully saturated and heads spinning decide to head for the coast and out of town. There are a lot more people here than in Patagonia!

The drive up along Hwy 1 is indeed beautiful — through Topanga Beach, Malibu, Ventura and Santa Barbara (the latter where we spend our first official on-the-road night). The posh houses are pretty wild and the beaches seem to stretch for miles.

We stop to watch surfers and kite surfers tackle the waves at various beaches along the way. It is mesmerizing to watch the groups of pelicans flying by and diving, bullet like, into the water below.

Leaving the suburbs of LA behind, we are both surprised at how quickly the population thins. Much sooner than expected, we are driving along stretches of land with nary a house on it.

Now we're cruisin'!
