Cape Foulwind

Leave it to Captain Cook — he sure knows how to name a landmark.

Apparently, Cape Foulwind got it's name when they dropped anchor here and the cook made up a spicy batch of bean burritos for the crew...

No, not really. He actually named it after the intense winds which prevail on the cape. I made the quick hike up to the lighthouse and checked out a few of the views.

Captain Cook had a sense of humor when it came to naming landmarks. There's Cape Foulwind and Cape Kindnappers. There's also Poverty Bay (because it contained absolutely nothing he wanted), Doubtful Sound (he was doubtful he could navigate his ship back out once entering it) and The Farewell Spit, the last thing his crew would see when sailing away from the south island.

Also at Cape Foulwind was this little guy, the weka (weck-ah). With so many spotted on our west coast journey, you might say the west is weka-mecca...

The weka is just one of the 40 birds in the world without any wings. Can you name the others? Maybe look it up on "Weka pedia!"
