Holy flying fruit bats!

Our new pre-dinner ritual is to sip a couple of Fijian Best Bitters and watch the fruit bats which start appearing at dusk just outside the cottage.

They are HUGE! They are known as Fijian Flying Foxes and when viewed through the binoculars, you can see why. At first, we assumed they were some kind of large sea bird, but Jenn quickly dispelled that notion when she noticed them hanging upside down from tree branches grooming themselves and airing out their wings (from all that damn rain?!?).

They have a caramel colored band of fur around the backs of their necks and long menacing looking hooks (bat thumbs!) at the end of their wings. Between 5 and 6 pm nightly we can see them flying along the bay and coming in to settle in the trees for a spell. WAY better than T.V.! (Patti-love weigh in with your expertise if you like!). This is not our photo below. Credit to Google...

Another mammal friend is a very polite but skittish dog who comes sniffing about on our veranda three to four times a day (usually coinciding with meal and snack times.... how convenient!). He does not like peanut butter, but he does enjoy bits of curried fish.

We probably shouldn't be feeding him treats, but dogs here have it tough and get no respect. Maybe if we feed him he'll keep an eye on the place while we are out kayaking?
